In an effort to bolster the defense capabilities of the Philippines, particularly in protecting its territorial waters in the West Philippine Sea, the Senate is advocating for the modernization of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG). As one of the country’s key frontline defense agencies, the PCG plays a critical role in safeguarding maritime sovereignty, especially in disputed areas.
The proposal involves increasing the agency’s budget to fund the acquisition of modern, high-quality equipment, including advanced maritime patrol assets and defense systems showcased by exhibitors at the recently held ADAS 2024. The exhibition, themed "Tomorrow’s Technology, For Today’s Security," highlighted the latest innovations in defense technology, which could significantly enhance the PCG’s operational capacity.
Through this modernization effort, the Philippine Coast Guard will be better equipped to fulfill its mandate, ensuring a stronger, more secure presence in the West Philippine Sea, and reinforcing the nation’s overall maritime defense posture.
